NAIAS 2014: Volkswagen Has Options for All

2014 NAIAS Volkswagen

Volkswagen introduced a new high-performance Golf R, off-road Beetle Dune Concept, and high-efficiency Passat BlueMotion Concept in Detroit this week. The newest Golf R is on display now, but sadly it will not be available for another year. VW’s latest hot hatch in the most powerful Golf ever at 290 hp, and it will also be their most powerful North American car. Both a six-speed manual and DSG will be available.

The VW Beetle Dune Concept is a Beetle R-Line that has been turned into a “Baja Bug for the 21st century.” It gains two inches of ground clearance, and it is slightly taller, wider, and longer than the standard Beetle.

If the performance or off-road options are not your thing, VW also had their Passat BlueMotion Concept on display. With an estimated 42 mph highway and 150 hp from just a regular non-hybrid, non-diesel engine, it is their attempt to get the most mileage out of a standard gas engine. To be honest, it was not much to look at since most of the technology was under the hood of this one. It has a 1.4L turbo four-cylinder that uses cylinder deactivation, as well as DSG transmission which decouples from the wheels when coasting.
