NAIAS 2015: Volkswagen

2015 NAIAS Volkswagen

The VW Golf was crowned North American Car of the Year, beating out two other finalists, the Ford Mustang and Hyundai Genesis. The annual award was announced Monday in Detroit, and it was a bit of a surprise the new Mustang did not win considering its spectacular powerplant and superb styling (related: Ford Mustang Review).

We have not had the new Golf in for a test, but in poking around the auto show model, we were surprised at the cheap feeling of the car’s interior and switchgear. However, most award jurors cited the Golf’s excellent driving dynamics and versatile cabin as the reason for selecting it, so we will have to get our hands on one and see if we agree.

Making its debut was the Cross Coupe GTE concept, finished in Grand Pacific Glacier blue, and the design of this plug-in hybrid is a hint of things to come from VW. Their upcoming 7-passenger SUV has been teased for a while yet never revealed, but it is expected to borrow design elements from this crossover concept.

The new Gold SportWagen replaces the Jetta SportWagen, and it can be had with either gas or diesel variants. The 1.8L 4-cylinder gas engine will be available with either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.0L TDI will be available with 6-speed manual or DSG transmissions.

The Touareg is receiving some minor updates in 2015, most notable are the standard bi-xenon headlights and LED taillights.
